Brighton and Arundel Castle
Up to 9 hours
Brighton is FUN! No wonder we all race down there from London quicker than you can say 'Panama hat' as soon as the sun comes out. You can enjoy the pebbly beach and famous pier. Join the fun at the fair. Shop 'til you drop in the 'Lanes', once haunted by thieves but now choc-a-bloc with antiques shops, boutiques and cafés. And wonder at the glorious madness of the Prince Regent's Royal Pavilion – an onion-domed extravaganza decorated in Eastern style by the future George IV.
Then on to Arundel Castle, the seat of Britain's premier Duke, the Duke of Norfolk. As well as the 11th-century castle and its lovely gardens, you can see the gothic Fitzalan Chapel, founded in 1390 by the 4th Earl of Arundel. Remarkably, the Catholic chapel is separated by a glass wall from the Anglican parish church of which it is a part! The pretty, historic town of Arundel, at the heart of the South Downs, is a great place for browsing shops for antiques.
