Windsor Castle, Eton and Hampton Court Palace
Up to 8 hours
Windsor, the oldest castle to have been continuously inhabited by the same Royal family and the biggest inhabited castle in the world, was first built by William the Conqueror to protect London's western side. See the sumptuous State Apartments full of wondrous art and antiques, Queen Mary's famous dolls house, the Drawings Gallery, the 14th-century St George's Hall, built by Edward III for his new Order of the Garter, and St George's Chapel, hung with the Garter members' standards, where 10 kings and the Queen Mother are buried.
Just across the Thames from Windsor Castle is Eton College, England's most famous public school founded in 1440 by Henry VI. As you wander past the College's historic buildings and photograph the pupils in their other-worldly unitorms, you'll find that Eton High Street is a wonderful shopping and eating stop!
Then on to Hampton Court, the fabulous palace built by Cardinal Wolsey, requisitioned by an envious Henry VIII, and partly rebuilt by Christopher Wren at the instruction of William and Mary. Don't miss the Privy Garden, restored to its 1702 glory, the Haunted Gallery where you may see the ghost of Queen Catherine Howard, or amazing Tudor kitchens which fed hundreds twice a day, the most complete examples still in existence. And, if you have a good sense of direction, you can try your luck in the world-famous maze...
