Canterbury, Leeds Castle and Dover
Up to 9 hours
Visit the shrine of the 'turbulent priest' St Thomas à Becket in Canterbury Cathedral – the cradle of English Christianity, founded by St Augustine in 597. The Cathedral has an 11th-century crypt, a 12th-century quire and a 14th-century nave – wonderful examples of English ecclesiastical architecture through the ages. It also has a remarkable range of stained glass, from 12th to 20th century.
Built on an island in the River Len, Leeds Castle is one of our finest. The interior was completely (and fabulously) refurbished by Lady Baillie, the daughter of an English aristocrat and an American heiress, in the 1920s. Outdoors, there's a renowned aviary where many rare and engangered species have been bred successfully, a yew maze, a turf maze for the claustrophobic, and much more.
Dover Castle, the 'key to England', boasts a Roman lighthouse, a Saxon church and a Norman keep. You can also tour secret wartime tunnels dug deep into the White Cliffs, a Second World War hospital, and the nerve-centre of Operation Dynamo, the remarkably successful race to rescue stranded British troops at Dunkirk in 1940.

The White Cliffs are spectacular, but don't expect any bluebirds...
