Chartwell and Hever Castle
Up to 8 hours
Winston Churchill's family home, Chartwell, lies in beautiful countryside, looking over the Weald of Kent. There are glorious rose and water gardens commissioned by the Great Man himself, and its rooms are kept as he would have known them. The house contains an unrivalled collection of paintings, photographs and memorabilia and is so evocative you can almost smell the cigar smoke!
Henry VIII courted Ann Boleyn at the moated 13th-century castle of Hever, in Kent, which was her childhood home, and, ironically, it later passed into the ownership of Henry's fourth wife, Anne of Cleeves. You can see two magnificent Books of Hours (prayer books) owned by Anne Boleyn at the castle today. The American-born financier and philanthropist William Waldorf Astor restored Hever in 1903, also creating the Italianate gardens and lake. There are both hedge and water mazes for you to lose yourself in.
