Holy Island and Berwick
Take the coast road from Newcastle to the pretty town of Berwick, which has been in both England and Scotland in its time. Nowadays, its people belong nominally to England, but maintain an independent spirit. After a wander around, and with timings depending on the tides, visit Holy Island and the imposing Lindisfarne Priory where the famous Lindisfarne Gospels were created. Back across the causeway is the magnificent Bamburgh Castle, restored in Victorian times but still dominated by its Norman keep, for stunning views and a fine collection of historic armour. Finally, to Mellerstain, the home of the Earl of Haddington, one of the finest houses built by Robert Adam in the 18th Century.
Hadrian's Wall and Harry Potter!
From Newcastle to Hadrian's Wall, the most challenging engineering project ever undertaken by the mighty Roman Empire (and that's saying something!). Explore part of the 76 mile-long 'border' and imagine life as a legionary posted to this remote region. Then to Alnwick, a quiet mediaeval town whose castle has been home to the Percy family, Dukes of Northumberland, for centuries. Quidditch is played in Alnwick's courtyard in the Harry Potter films, which makes it a must-see for fans. Inside the castle we can see one of the finest collections of Renaissance art in Europe, stunning state rooms and more. Alnwick's grounds – which are being massively improved by the new Duchess – boast a recently-created poison garden, and the world's biggest tree house (more like a tree village) – a truly amazing arborial extravaganza you really shouldn't miss.
We can also take you to Durham and the Kielder Nature Reserve, the museums and galleries of Newcastle, and the wild nightclubs, if you're energetic enough! For more information on options, charges and booking please contact us
